(Chesapeake, VA) – December 14, 2016 – For many, Christmas is a wonderful time of year, Hampton Roads native and NBA legend Allen Iverson understands how challenging this time of year can also be for so many. Compelled by this understanding, he is coming home next week to spread love and Christmas cheer.
On Monday, December 19, 2016 from 5:30pm – 7pm Allen will team with Grove Baptist Church, a historical faith-based organization, Crossover Promotions and the Portsmouth Redevelopment and Housing Authority to put more gifts under the tree for residents in the Swanson Homes community. Allen will be donating toys and store gift certificates to residents at the Recreation Center at Swanson Homes.
The Swanson Homes area was chosen because the families experienced devastation with the Hurricane Matthew storm this October. Following the storms more than 200 children and adults were displaced and some are still in the process of getting back on their feet. Allen Iverson, Hall of Famer, was moved by his community’s calamity. Primarily known for his stunning moves on the basketball court, the phenomenal athlete is recognized for his big heart as well and the community appreciates it. “We appreciate Mr. Iverson, Dr. Marriner and the Grove Church family for their giving hearts during this holiday season,” shares Ms. Donnell Brown, Interim Executive Director for PRHA. “Their contributions to the Swanson Homes families meets the needs brought on by unforeseen circumstances, and helps lift the spirits of those impacted by the storm.”
On Tuesday, December 20, 2016, from 5:30pm-7pm Allen will return to his hometown of Newport News, VA to donate toys and gifts to the Boys and Girls Club and provide dinner to members of the Newport News community. The dinner is being catered by Back Yard Bar B Que and will take place at the Boys and Girls Club of Greater Hampton Roads.
“The Holidays bring much joy to so many families, but for so many others, it’s a time of overwhelming stress, especially for families who are unable to provide for their loved ones as they desire. During this time of year, I make a conscious effort to lend an extra hand to those in need. I chose to serve the Swanson Homes’ families, after hearing about what they had been through, because of the storm. And for me the Boys and Girls Club is a second home. Virginia will always be my home, so if I can help anyone from home that’s in need- it is always extra special” Iverson says.
Allen has always had a heart for helping those in need, especially those from the community where he grew up. He has many fond memories of his days spent in Newport News at the Boys and Girls Club of Greater Hampton Roads.
